The nerfing of characters.

Really, it's not so much nerfing, as it is the fact that you previously overlooked something. I've done this to my players before, I don't jerk them around and take away stuff unless I need to, and I explain why I am, and what the effects will be.

Think of it more like misreading the BaB or Saves that a class gets. Not, you actually nerfing the class.

At the same time, the players know that I can, and do, prompt them when it comes to making their characters act more effectively. I'll ask them if they want an Item that does X in their inventory; because after a certain point in time, no one cares if you have a 30' cone of acid that's tied to your CR for saves and damage.
